Do you think that language diversity is important for our society? Actually, I can not give definite answer. On one hand, language diversity is a nuisance, it is very uncomfortable thing. For me as a dweller, ordinary citizen it is more comfortable and easy if all people speak the same language I speak. I want everybody understand me and I want understand everyone. I don` t like situations where I’m not able to understand somebody. It kind of limits me, limits my capabilities, my wishes. It would be great if all people on our planet could speak one language. Commerce and industry, communication, experience and ideas exchange would be much easier. But from other hand language diversity is very important. Why do I think so? Language is unalienable part of culture. So speculating about language diversity we eventually end up talking about cultures, and therefore nations. One language no doubt will unify all people around the world. It will lead to global sameness of people. Is it good? To my mind it is not. Actually I think that the mere fact that humanity consists of different nations means a lot. It came out naturally and we shouldn’t interfere with this process. I consider attempts to create one universal language for all like Esperanto to be interference with nature like that scientists do all the time. They modify genes, they create new organisms and plants and God knows where all their experiments could lead us to. This world should be diverse. Diversity makes it flexible, dynamic, and rich. Even clashes of different opinions and views can be useful. Of course, if they don’t cause wars. I believe that globally unified world is not able to develop effectively. Besides I consider human societies to be very imperfect. Wealthy people have more privileges and rights than ordinary people. If all super rich people unite they will try to get control over all people on our planet. May they try to do it these days, may be they already did it. We can see the aftermath of activity of transnational companies. They possess giant reserves and are able to control governments. One day we will find ourselves depending on them. We will become slaves. All wars that took place happened because one country wanted to give law to other country by force. We need to understand that it is important to respect other nations. Language diversity seems to be nuisance, but admitting it we admit that other opinions, ideas and cultures exist, which differ from ours. I believe it teaches us tolerance. There is a problem that there are people who look down upon other nations. But I don’t think language diversity caused it. Hatred or jealousy are of the same nature in Mexico and the USA, in Spain and Russia. Language diversity reflects diversity of nations. And it is cool. Japanese culture has something that Russian doesn’t have, but Russian culture have something which is absent in Japanese one. We can see how other nations gain success or fail and learn from them. I believe this world is much more interesting because it consists of nations which differ. All we need is to admit that it is normal and for our good.
