Raisins - history of the city
Izyum is a city of regional importance in the southeastern part of the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, 127 km from Kharkov and 592 km from Kiev by motor roads. The area is 43.6 square kilometers; The population is 53.7 thousand people.
Raisins is located on the banks of the Seversky Donets River, on the border of the forest-steppe and steppe zones, in the transition zone of the Central Russian Upland to the Donetsk Ridge. 9 km from Izyum is one of the largest reservoirs in Eastern Ukraine - Krasnooskolskoye. There are several versions of the origin of the name of the city: the first that its name Izyum received from the modified Tatar word "guzun", which in translation means "crossing"; Izyum ford or ferry was known long before the founding of the city. According to the second version, Izyum is an altered Tatar word "I know", meaning "long elongated mountain", which can be connected with the mountain Kremenets (Uzyun-Kurgan), which is located in the most strategically advantageous place in this region. The mountain Kremenets received its name from the Tatar fortification - "kermen", which was on the top of the mountain in the XIV century; Later this place was occupied by Russian patrols.
However, on these lands stretched huge royal grape plantations, the border of which was located near Izyumskaya Sloboda, so some scientists believe that the name of the city Izyum (dried grapes) is associated with this tasty and useful product. On the coat of arms of Izyum, approved on September 21, 1781, "in the golden field are depicted three vines with fruits, showing the very name of this city and that this fruit in the vicinity of this city will be born."
Raisins are located in the historical region called Slobodskaya Ukraine or Slobozhanshchina; In the XI-XII centuries in the territory of the modern city there were fights between the Old Russian princes and the nomads of the Polovtsians. The watchtower Izyum Sakma, the eastern branch of the infamous Muravsky Shlykh, was first mentioned in the annals in 1571. Later, until 1651, various sources described Izyumsky trench as a small fortification. In the second half of the 17th century a small group of settlers settled in these places; In the documents of 1680 this settlement was called the Izyum town.
However, the official date of the founding of the town of Izyum is 1681, when under the leadership of the Cossack colonel Grigory Donets-Zaharzhevsky a large fortress was built, Izyum, consisting of "big" and "small" cities. Where there was a "big city" - now the central part of Izyum. To build the fortress was chosen a successful terrain - from three sides it was washed by the river Seversky Donets, and with the fourth was covered by the mountain Kremenets.
Soon Izyum turned into the center of the province, and in 1685 became a regimental city - the center of the Izyumsky Sloboda Cossack regiment, which was subordinated to 13 surrounding cities and settlements (before that, the Cossacks from Chuguev and Zmiyeva were carrying in Izemy). Izyumsky Slobodskaya Cossack regiment (since 1765 - the Hussar regiment) took part in all military campaigns - the Northern War, Russian-Turkish wars, stormed Ochakov, Bendery, Izmail under the command of A.Suvorov, fought at Borodino and the winner entered the French capital Paris.
