Everybody thought he had died of malaria in Africa. I thought they had moved to a new flat. When I rang her up, she had already gone to her summer cottage. Nobody knew what had happened to them. When they returned from the theatre, the maid had already left. After he had left for the North,  she heard nothing about him.
