By Anton Razmakhnin The Moscow News Despite numerous technological revolutions in photography sinceDaguerre`s time,the main point of the art remains the same :recording reality by means of tone scale. The quality and variety of photo exhibitions within this year’s Photo biennale shows what modern photography is capable of expressing by these means. Historically, the first photographs ever were pure documentary shots. The exhibition Photos for IDs shows the evolution of Russian ID photography from the 1880s to the 1950. It’s curious to observe how the style of ID layout has been changing throughout the years, influenced by wars and revolutions. The show takes place in the Moscow Museum of Contemporary Arts (25, Petrovka, St) the same exhibition hall also hosts other amazing collections of documentary shots. The Ethnology Museum (Saint-Petersburg) presents a unique show entitled Journeys through Time and Space: The Russian Empire Photographed in 1890-1910.Wonderful pictures shot in distant places of Russia give a good idea what life was like a century ago. In the next room there is a brilliant exhibition of Cornell Capas Kennedy for President Series showing the 60 presidential campaign of John Kennedy in full detail. Another set of documentary photo exhibitions takes place in Zurab Tseretelis Gallery of Arts. Five shows are devoted to war reporting, including shots from all regional wars from 1972 till now, including the '04 Beslan terrorist attack. Simon Norfolk's Afghanistan collection (arranged by the Photographer's Gallery, London) has been already widely acknowledged in the U.S and Europe for purity of pictorial means and astonishing impressiveness.
