The only way to reduce the amount of traffic in cities today is by reducing the need for people to travel from home for work, education or shopping. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from own knowledge or experience. It is certainly true that today all large cities throughout the world suffer from a growing number of vehicles on roads and traffic jams they cause. We can see and experience it daily, in the rush hours. Obviously, traffic problems are caused by people traveling from home for work, study or shopping purposes. Although the reduction in individual’s desire for traveling has a positive impact, other aspects of this practice should be also considered carefully. Firstly, it is true that web-masters, English tutors, freelancers are able to work on-line due to profession and the state-of-the-art technologies but there are still plenty of occupations that require face-to-face contacts or a personal cooperation between employees and mechanisms or machines. Secondly, even although on-line studying is an available option for students and teachers, there is a large majority of people who do not have an access to the Internet and has to go to school or university by public transport. Finally, it is unlikely to be a popular tendency for customers to purchase clothes, cars or apartments via the Internet. Consumers prefer touching and seeing merchandises in reality to ordering them on-line blindly. So, in conclusion, I think that the elimination of people’s need for traveling affects the traffic problem positively but it is unrealistic to think that everyone would want or could do things remotely. In terms of other solutions, perhaps we need to think about limiting private cars in the city centers, developing up-to-date public transport and not road based vehicles, such as sky trains or subway
