A. What do you plan to do after college?
B. What is your favourite class?
C. When you first went to college what was it like?
D. What is your major subject?
E. What are the differences between high school and university classes?
F. What do you think about the teaching in the college?
G. Do you have any advice for people planning to attend college?
1. Really strange, I felt as if I was on another planet. At home I live in the country; at college I lived in a hostel, on the third floor. It was so noisy – people shouting and laughing all the time, and outside on the street non-stop noise all night: cars, buses, police sirens.
2. The biggest gap is the size of classes: in some classes there were only 10 students, in others there could be as many as 300 of us. I preferred the smaller classes because in the large ones no one talks much except for the professor giving lecture. Sometimes someone asks a question, but that’s usually just to try and make an impression.
3. That’s easy to answer. It was a writing lesson. It was very relaxing and friendly, and we all knew each other’s names, which doesn’t happen so often at college. It was the students who did most of talking there. We swapped lots of ideas about books or articles we were reading to find out about different writing styles. Sometimes we read out things we had written. There was some reading about theory, style, of course, but it was all interesting.
4. Most professors are extremely well educated. They don’t just base their lectures on textbooks. They do real research work and tell us about it. These people are superhuman. Yet at times it seems like none has any real-world people skills. They were taught to study and be brilliant, but not how to teach a group of 20-year-olds. Many are out of touch with students.
5. I’m majoring in sociology, which means I study groups of people, how they behave with each other, and what theory and policy says about these groups. My main areas of interest are mass media and women’s issues. I feel I have lots of choices for a career. You don’t have to follow a career in your major subject, so I may choose to do something else, maybe not social work.
6. Right now I’m not planning to do a masters, so I’m thinking about what job I’d like to do. Maybe I shall work in advertising – it sounds interesting and I think it would be fun, but then I thought of being a journalist last week. It changes every day!
7. You have to do enough research to find out for yourself what subject you can study, but think for yourself and follow your dreams! People at home can give you useful advice, but it’s your decision, it’s your life. It’s not only the smartest who achieve, it’s those who work the hardest. If you work hard, you can make chances for yourself.
