Pen-friends are friends with whom you communicate only by means of writing letters.  Your friend can be a very close person to you, but everything you know about him or her you get from his or her long letters which come by mail. Nowadays it's easier because we can use e-mail: it's much faster and gives you and opportunity to hear from your pen-friends more often.
