Сочинение: Приемы комического в языке произведений П.Г. Вудхауза

I don’t think I have ever seen a dog who conveyed more vividly the impression of being rooted to the spot and prepared to stay there till the cows – or, in this case, his proprietress – come home.

Обыграно выражение till the cows come home, означающее - for ever.

This room of Stiffy’s, I should have mentioned, in addition to being equipped with four-posted beds, richly upholstered chairs and all sorts of other things far too good for a young squirt who went about biting the hand that had fed her at luncheon.

Вместо абстрактного слова food в идиоме  to bite the hand that feeds one – to harm someone who has treated one well дано конкретное luncheon. (Метафоричность выражения, кстати сказать, исчезает и из-за того, что оно употреблено в буквальном значении. Герой действительно кормил эту «молодую нахалку» ланчем.)

I had expected to freese her young – or, rather, middle-aged – blood and have her perm stand on end. (“Jeeves in the Offing”)

Чтобы быть предельно точным, герой заменяет в выражении to have one’s hair stand on end слово hair на perm (permanent) – стиль прически.

Иногда устойчивая идиома получает дополнительное развитие. Так устойчивое выражение  cold feet – loss of courage or confidence, употребляется следующим образом:

I don’t mind telling you that the more I contemplated the coming chat, the colder the feet became.

Схожий прием использован в обыгрывании фразеологического оборота to pull someone’s leg – to make playful fun of someone by encouraging him to believe something untrue.

With a firm hand this girl had pulled my leg, but why – that was the point that baffled – why had she pulled my leg?

Обыгрывание выражения to pull someone’s leg усиливается его противопоставлением со словосочетанием  with a firm hand.

Cпособы игрового использования устойчивых выражений у Вудхауза многочисленны. Порой он просто меняет два компонента идиомы местами.

This was not the first time she had displayed the velvet hand beneath the iron glove – or, rather, the other way about – in this manner.

Ср. the iron hand in the velvet glove – a very firm intension hidden under a gentle appearance.

Кроме того, иногда идиома может только подразумеваться. В этом случае автор намекает на какой-нибудь один из ее компонентов.

…a cupbord or armoire in which you could have hidden a dozen corpses. (“Jeeves in the Offing”)

Это шутливое описание шкафа отсылает читателя к известному выражению  a skeleton in the cupbord (т.е. a family secret). Комический эффект достигнут и потому, что фигуральное выражение использовано для описания реального предмета мебели.

Буквальное понимание идиом – излюбленный прием Вудхауза.

‘You’ll be able now to give it as your considered opinion that the man is as loony as a coot, sir Roderick’

A pause ensued during which Pop Glossop appeared to be weighing this, possible thinking back to coots he had met in the course of his professional career and try to estimate their dopines as compared with that of W.Cream. (“Jeeves in the Offing”)

Выражение as crazy as a coot, понятое буквально, помогает достичь комического эффекта.

Или.

‘The oil seems to have gone off the boil. Yessir, if that was the language of love, I’ll eat my hat’, - said the blood relation, alluding, I took it, to the beastly straw contraption in which she does her gardening. (“Jeeves in the Offing”)

Здесь один из компонентов идиомы I’ll eat my hat – I’ll be very surprised, понимается в отрыве от целого выражения. Hat понимается не как обобщенный образ, а как некая вполне конкретная шляпка.

Деформация словосочетания так же может рассматриваться как близкий к деформации идиом феномен. Прием в принципе используется один и тот же – пренебрежение нормами языка для достижения комического эффекта.  Случаи употребления этого приема  также весьма многочисленны у Вудхауза.

I ground a tooth or two and waved the arms in a passionate gesture. (“Jeeves in the Offing”)

Деформация выражения grind one’s teeth, означающего to rub teeth harshly together.

То же самое мы имеем и с выражением to raise one’s eyebrows – to show surprise.

I raised an eyebrow or two.
