One day I asked the emperor to allow me to see the capital of the country. The emperor gave me permission, but told me to be very careful not to destroy the houses.
The city is surrounded by a thick wall with towers. I stepped over the great western gate and passed very slowly along the two main streets. There were a lot of people on the roofs, and many looked out of the windows.
The city is a square. Each side of the wall is five hundred feet long. The two great streets cross in the middle and divide the city into four quarters. The emperor's palace is in the centre of the city where the two great streets meet. It is surrounded by a wall two feet high. I stepped over this wall. I wanted to see the royal palace very much. When I was near the palace, I lay down on the ground and looked in through the windows, which were left open. There I saw the emperor and his family with the lords and ladies of the court. They were kind enough to smile at me. I asked the emperor for my freedom. He told me I must wait till his council agreed to give it to me.
One morning I was visited by the emperor's secretary. I wanted to lie down on the ground, which I did when someone wanted to talk to me. But he asked me to sit and hold him in my hand during our talk. At first he congratulated me on my freedom. He said «But you received your freedom soon because our country is in a very bad condition.» (By J. Swift)
